IPL Opener In Jeopardy As Bengal Weather Threatens To Play Spoilsport With Rain; Yellow Alert In Kolkata

Kolkata Weather News: Bengal faces turbulent weather conditions, with thunderstorms, gusty winds, and rain expected over the weekend in South and North Bengal.

Kolkata Rain Forecast: The skies have remained cloudy across Bengal, including Kolkata and various districts, for two days with sporadic light rainfall. However, the showers were minimal. Weather forecasts indicate turbulent conditions in South Bengal from Thursday to Sunday and in North Bengal from Friday to Sunday. The inclement weather conditions are now threatening to disrupt the IPL 2025 opening match between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) slated to start at 7.30 PM at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. 

Thunderstorms with lightning, hailstorms, and gusty winds, including Nor'wester storms or Kalbaishakahi (Bengali: কালবৈশাখী), are expected in the districts of South Bengal during the afternoon or evening. Current Weather Systems Affecting Bengal

A cyclonic circulation is active over Assam, influencing weather patterns across the region. Additionally, two trough lines are exerting their impact, leading to light to moderate rainfall. One trough extends from Chhattisgarh to Karnataka via Telangana, while the other stretches from Karnataka to Kerala. Meanwhile, a fresh Western Disturbance has entered the northwestern Himalayan region, potentially altering weather conditions further.

As per a bulletin by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), "Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) are likely to occur at one or two places." A yellow alert has been issued for Kolkata.

Weather Forecast For South Bengal

Here's the detailed forecast for South Bengal for the next three days:

March 22 (Saturday): Rainfall will intensify in Birbhum, East Burdwan, Murshidabad, Nadia, North, and South 24 Parganas, and East Midnapore. Other districts may also experience isolated rain.

March 23 (Sunday): Scattered rainfall is expected across almost all districts of South Bengal.

March 24 (Monday): Isolated showers are likely in East Midnapore and South 24 Parganas.

The weather department has predicted traffic disruptions and partial damage to crops during the inclement weather. 

Weather Forecast For North Bengal

An IMD bulletin stated the day temperature (maximum temperature ) will fall by 3-4°C over the next two days and then hold steady for 24 hours. It will then climb by 2-4°C over the districts in sub-Himalayan West Bengal.

March 22 (Saturday): Scattered showers will affect all districts, while Malda, South Dinajpur, and Alipurduar may experience hailstorms.

March 23 (Sunday): Light rain or thundershower is likely to occur at one or two places in all the districts.

March 24 (Monday): Weather is likely to be clear and dry from Monday throughout the week.
