UPI Down: Unified Payment Interface (UPI) services experienced a major outage on Wednesday evening, leaving users across the country struggling to complete transactions. Popular digital payment apps, including Google Pay, were affected, with complaints pouring in from frustrated customers.

Thousands Report Payment Failures

According to outage tracking platform DownDetector, as many as 3,132 complaints regarding UPI failures were logged by 8:01 PM. Google Pay alone accounted for 296 of these reports, indicating that multiple platforms were impacted.

Many users took to social media to express their frustration, citing failed payments, delays, and transaction errors.

With UPI being the backbone of digital transactions in India, the disruption caused inconvenience to businesses and individuals relying on instant payments. Many reported being stuck at stores, unable to make purchases, while some faced difficulties in sending money to contacts.

As per Downdetector, banking services of HDFC Bank and Axis Bank are affected too, with more banks such as Bank of India and Bank of Baroda also taking a turn for the worse at the time of writing.

NPCI Reacts

At around 8:45 pm, Downdetector showed a dip in reports of outages, signalling restoration of UPI services for some users. 

UPI protocol developer, National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), said that it has faced "intermittent technical issues" that caused a "partial decline" in UPI.
