Wary Of 2024 Violence Rerun, Bengal Police Step Up Security Ahead Of Ram Navami Celebrations

In light of political tensions, West Bengal has deployed 29 IPS officials and 1000s of cops to ensure law and order during Ram Navami celebrations.

The West Bengal government has increased security measures in its sensitive areas in anticipation of the Ram Navami celebrations.  

Due to the current political scenario in the state, the police have been put on high alert. As per the details, the Mamata Banerjee administration has sent out 29 IPS officials to ensure law an order situation.

What Preparations Have Been Done?

As many as 29 senior officials have been assigned by the West Bengal police to supervise ten sensitive regions during the Ram Navami rallies.

It includes four district police areas, six police commissionerates, Howrah, Barrackpore, Chandannagar, Malda, Islampur, Asansol-Durgapur, Siliguri, Howrah rural, Murshidabad, and Coochbehar. 

According to the sources, about 3000 cops will be on the road across in Kolkata to maintain law and order.

Moreover, monitoring units, surveillance drones, quick response teams, Heavy Radio Flying Squads, PCR vans, CCTVs installed and additional police forces have been stationed at key points to avert any undesirable events. Officers in plain clothes will also be monitoring from tall buildings. There will be police escorts with body cameras in smaller processions.

A senior official told India Today that every procession across the state will have police coverage and the senior officers will be in charge of overseeing the tasks. "We are keeping a close watch everywhere".

As a precaution, on April 6, the movement of goods trucks in Kolkata would be prohibited from 12 PM to 12 AM, with the exception of necessities like the goods vehicles carrying emergency and perishable items like oxygen, medicines, fruits, vegetables, fish, milk, LPG cylinders, lubricants, petroleum oil etc.

The West Bengal Police (Law & Order) Additional Director General (ADG), Jawed Shamim, on Tuesday, said that no leave shall be granted to the police personnel of your respective police commissionerate/district/unit with effect from  April 2 to April 9, unless there is any emergency.

Murshidabad Riots - 2024

Violence broke out against a Ram Navami procession in the Shaktipur neighbourhood of Murshidabad, West Bengal, on April 17, 2024. Stones were pelted at the procession from rooftops and there were also reports of a bombing incident. Prohibitory orders under Section 144 were imposed in the area.

Violence in Howrah In 2023

In the Howrah district , tension erupted after stones were allegedly pelted at the procession and vehicles being torched. One person killed and several others being injured after a violence erupted during procession in Dalkhola city also.
